Akademisi Fakultas Hukum Universitas Airlangga. Menuntaskan MA. in Human Rights and Social Development, Mahidol University (2006), dan Ph.D di Faculty of Law, Leiden University (2014), dengan disertasi “Press Freedom, Law and Politics in Indonesia: A Socio-Legal Study”.

Menjadi dosen atau peneliti tamu di Graduate School of International Development (GSID), Nagoya University (2015), Center for Asian Legal Studies NUS Law School (2017), Sydney Myer Asia Center, Faculty of Arts the University of Melbourne (2017), Vietnam National University Law School (2017), dan Norwegian Center for Human Rights (NCHR) Faculty of Law, University of Oslo (2018).

Dalam asosiasi akademik, menjadi Ketua Asosiasi Filsafat Hukum Indonesia (AFHI, 2013-2014), Ketua Serikat Pengajar HAM Indonesia (SEPAHAM Indonesia, 2014-2017). Pendiri sekaligus komite pengarah Southeast Asian Human Rights Studies Network (SEAHRN), dan kini Ketua Kaukus Indonesia untuk Kebebasan Akademik (KIKA, 2019).

Menjadi redaktur tamu, reviewer, maupun editorial board di 14 jurnal nasional dan internasional, antara lain Cross-cultural Human Rights Review (NL), The International Journal on Minority and Group Rights (NL), IKAT: The Indonesian Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (UGM), Asian Journal of Law and Society (UK), Journal of Southeast Asian Human Rights (JSEAHR) (Unej), Journal of Human Rights and Peace Studies, (Mahidol, THA).
